Winter Sports Prospectives at Obama
By Arya Datta, Hirai Suda, Elliot Younes (Sophomores)
Over the past few days, The Eagle Times has interviewed all of the coaches and or, the captain players of the winter sports here at Obama Academy.
We start with the Boys Basketball Team. As stated in last issue, Junior Torrien Perkins is looking forward to the upcoming boys basketball season and is looking forward to their shot at redemption and making a statement in the city leagues against other Pittsburgh Public schools such as Allderdice and Brashear.
Moving over to Girls Basketball, Junior Dom Harris considers the team to be in prime condition for the coming season, after last season’s City Championship win, the girls team knows that they are going to be a large target to the fellow city schools. Harris says, “Definitely watch out for Kimaya Sadé, our starting power forward coming from Oakland. She’s a literal dawg on the court. Also watch out for Taylor Phillips, our starting point guard. We call her ‘sharpshooter’ for a reason.”
Next we have the swimming teams. Junior Cora Myers, the captain of the Girls Swim Team is excited to have a bigger team to do relays. Junior Isaac Tabachnick, the captain of the Boys Swim Team says, “I’m mainly excited about the atmosphere that comes with the meets.” With a growing team, Myers hopes this coming season the team can perform better against big suburban teams. Mr Kress, the coach of the swim teams, is excited for the new season and the new swimmers.
Finally, we turn to wrestling. Senior Khalil Collins, the captain of the Wrestling Team, is excited for this new team to win city championships. Sophomore Marcos Gonzales is excited about the growing team, saying “There were like 20 people just at the hydration test! That is so much better than the 8 people from last year. I’m super confident about winning city champs now and bringing home a trophy to our school!” The team started practicing on Monday, November 21.
